Oil Reclamation and Refortification practices – What can do the RULER for you?
With the electrical energy market exponentially growing, the need for extending the useful life of high performance lubricants requires new maintenance strategies. In earlier newsletters we discussed the role of RULER for monitoring the antioxidants and oxidative health, as part of these strategies.
Recently end-users and OEM’s have been applying oil reconditioning practices, like reclamation and refortification. The main goal of these strategies is to make the lubricant (in large oil reservoirs), suitable for extended use. Reclamation strategies are focusing on the cleaning and reconditioning of a lubricant, and can be combined with the addition (re-additizing or fortifying) by means of a well defined additive package.

What will be the role of the RULER in those programs?

As part of these fortifying techniques, chemical compounds like antioxidants, are added to the lubricant to retard the oxidation to the lubricants, or help prevent the lubricant degradation.
If a lack of antioxidants is occurring, reactive oxidation compounds (known better as C-radicals) formation will increase, and result in excessive base-oil degradation (secondary degradation mechanism). It’s exactly the varnish, sludge and lacquer formation that lubricant professionals want to avoid. In recent case studies for nuclear power generation site, and combined cycle power plant, the RULER played a major role as part of the reliable detection of the antioxidants, to monitor the correct amount of antioxidant added to the turbine Lube oil reservoir. With the help of existing voltammetric test method standards, ASTM D-6971 and D-6810, (Linear Sweep Voltammetry)

will help you in monitoring correctly the antioxidants remaining useful life, for phenols, amines, ZDDP etc...

NLGI 2004 AGM Technical paper – Voltammetry for antioxidant monitoring on wind turbine greases
At the recent NLGI AGM 2004 meeting Fluitec and Koehler Instruments presented the results from a research program on antioxidant monitoring for greases. One of the interesting case studies was the correlation between Acid number and Antioxidants RUL for synthetic based Li-OH greases, being in service on the main generator bearing.
