Dear Reader:

We are glad to send you this edition of the Fluitec International Newsletter, which will allow you to discover new information and benefits regarding the RULER.

RULER, a new approved ASTM D 6971 test method

To meet the demand of monitoring antioxidants in new and used lubricants, this new voltammetric test method has been approved. By using this method mixtures of antioxidants, like amines and phenols can be reliably detected, to monitor the lubricant’s oxidative health. We will keep you informed on further evolutions of ASTM Test Methods. Also methods like ASTM D-6224 and D-4378, Practices for Steam and Gas turbine lubricants monitoring programs, have been revised at ASTM, in order to make these standards up-to-date with the latest industrial and operational requirements. RULER and RDMS© software, the key combination for all of your on-site oil analysis programs

Modern maintenance strategies require fast and on-site oil analysis techniques, to enhance quick and correct decisions. To enable end-users to evaluate test data from the field instrument (RULER CE320), Fluitec International has launched the R-DMS© 1.1 software, standing for Ruler Data Management Software.

This new version 1.1 of R-DMS as part of the RULER package, allows end-users to download RULER field data from the CE320 field unit to desktop software. R-DMS©

S       is a Windows® based software designed for the RULER® CE 320

S       the user can maintain large databases

S       the user can perform trend time-series testing

S       the user can view multiple tests

S       and export data to other formats (with other oil test data).

RULER for monitoring antioxidants in lubricants

As industry recognizes the oxidation process as one of the primary lubricant degradation mechanisms, monitoring oxidative stability has become increasingly important.

What is oxidation?  It is the chemical reaction at elevated temperatures between the dissolved atmospheric oxygen and the lubricant base-oil.

During this oxidation, as hydrocarbon molecules will break down, reaction products will be formed, better known as radicals (very reactive chemical compounds). Subsequent reactions of these radicals lead to the formation of peroxides, and must therefore be quenched (see figure) by the antioxidants to preserve the lubricant integrity, or its Remaining Useful Life, RUL.

Remaining Useful Life  =   RUL   =     proactive value of antioxidant monitoring

The answer to this question has to be found into the basic characteristic of modern Maintenance Techniques, requiring Root Cause Failure analysis. In order to extend fault free machine life, trending of oxidative health or antioxidants concentration, will be able to look at the root causes of lubricant failures.

By monitoring the antioxidants, lubricant operators will detect in advance additive failure and logically avoid oxidation, acid formation, thickening, varnishing, and bearing lubricant starvation.

  RULER for grease condition monitoring

From large railway, high-speed roller bearings, over aerospace bearings, till miniscule bearings for hard disk drives assemblies, the RULER is the instrument by excellence, allowing you to monitor the oxidative life for a wide range of in-service greases.
With micro-samples less than 150 mg of grease, and within a few minutes, RULER will communicate maintenance operators the remaining useful life (oxidative protection) of the in-service grease, by measuring the remaining antioxidants.

RULER a reliable test method for wind turbine gearbox lubricants

For the production of environment friendly energy, the market of wind turbine power generation is growing exponentially, in countries as Denmark, Germany, Spain, USA etc … By using long-life, and high performance gearbox lubricants on these wind turbine gearbox applications, the need of oil condition monitoring becomes stringent. Throughout the world Fluitec has achieved several applications with the RULER, contributing to the on-site condition monitoring programs by monitoring wear metals, water, oxidation and viscosity. We hope to publish soon technical papers on this high-technology application.
