RULER Technology for Helicoptor Engine Oil Testing as Part of Engine Reliability Programs

At the 2005 SAE E34 conference, Turbomeca and Fluitec presented their experiences with their oil monitoring programs, entitled “ Helicopter Engine Oil Health Monitoring by using RULER technology”.

In the interest of avoiding the negative consequences associated with oxidized jet engine oils, the concept of measuring a lubricant’s remaining useful life by linear sweep Voltammetry (RULER – ASTM D-6971) has recently been introduced, as part of maintenance practices in order to meet reliability and availability requirements with modern helicopter engines.

In the world of helicopter operators the availability of their equipment is key in their daily operations. Add to that the economical factor of operating engines with longer drain interval (by using High Thermal Stability type of Jet Engine oils), with those 2 factors, helicopter maintenance operators have been optimizing their maintenance specification which requires a close monitoring of the antioxidant concentrations (RUL%) during the lubricant use. In this case the combination with Spectrometric Oil Analysis (wear metals) was experienced as a way to optimize maintenance
practices.

 

 

RULER Technology will bring the solution to this new requirement, and RULER as a field test is not only faster to perform, but it will also enable users to perform a trend of individual antioxidant consumption during the lifetime of the jet engine lubricants.
